Cloud Computing : On demand service, access through internet, shared resources, scalability.
Delivery models of cloud computing : SAAS, PAAS, IAAS
What is IAAS, PAAS, SAAS ?
IAAS – Infrastructure as a service [Servers, network, operating systems, and data storage]
What ? Virtualization, Servers, Networking & data storage.
Who can use ? Company SysAdmins
Example products : AWS EC2 instance, GoGrid, RackSpace
Pros: Scalable infrastructure, provider responsible for managing the infrastructure.
Cons: Security issues.
PAAS – Platform as a service
What ? Programming language execution environment, OS, web server and database.
Who can use ? Developers
Example products : AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Windows Azure, Google App Engine, Heroku, force.com
Pros : Cost effective rapid development, Quick deployment of web applications.
Cons : Developers are limited to providers lang environment, Migrations issues (vendor lock in)
SAAS – Software as a service
What ? Pay per use of software applications to users, no need to install or manage these softwares, accessible through Internet.
Who can use ? End users
Example products : Google products, google drive, salesforce, microsoft office 365
Pros : Universally accessible, Vendor provides modest software tools online 24/7
Cons : Portability, Browser issues, Internet performance might affect the application performance.
What is Cloud Computing?
Put simply, cloud computing provides an easy way to access servers, storage, databases, and a full suite of application services over the Internet.
When talking about "cloud", in most cases it means the " public cloud ", ie the data, unlike the " private cloud ", is not stored in one's own company and thus not on the servers in the company's server room.
As a result, you rent IT infrastructures that are equipped with memory and processor power, depending on the size of your needs, or that already provide suitable software solutions. The individual combination of resources and software can reduce personnel costs and the costs of procuring own IT infrastructures as well as costs for their maintenance.
Which types are there?
There are different types of cloud computing. A distinction can be made using the cloud computing architecture, which consists of three layers: the infrastructure layer, the platform layer and the application layer.
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
The infrastructure is the lowest layer in cloud computing. Here, IaaS describes a business model in which no complete solution (hardware and software application) is offered, but only the hardware required to implement specific applications. This is located in data centers and is also looked after there. Cloud users have access to virtualized computing , data transport, and data storage components , allowing them to deploy and install any application programs and operating systems.
Simply put, rent IT infrastructure and maintenance.
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
The platform represents the middle layer. Here, less the IT administrator is in demand, but the software developer. Platform as a Service is a service that enables developers to develop and execute their own programs on the infrastructure offered by means of interfaces. For this purpose, the PaaS provider provides development environments in the form of frameworksready. In doing so, he makes specifications for the programming languages and interfaces to be used, data memories, networks and data processing systems. However, the developer has no ability to administratively or controllably access the infrastructure used to provide the service. He can only control the programs and data he has contributed himself.
Software as a Service (SaaS)
Applications represent the last layer and logically build on all previous layers. Software as a Service is a business model in which the software application is no longer sold to the customer, but is provided as a service for a fee.
As a result, the software and the IT infrastructure are operated by an external service provider. To run the software, only an internet-enabled device and an internet browser are required in most cases . This allows cost-effective hardware to be used in the enterprise while benefiting from the full computing power and storage capacity of a data center.
Simply stated : Software is not licensed and installed on own hardware, but only as a service "rented" and can be used anywhere with any Internet browser.

Hi Raja, Thanks a million for your excellent feedback, sure will include – happy learning InterviewDOT
Then docker is an example for PAAS im right
Yes , PAAS helps to run the application, other examples: AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Windows Azure, Heroku, Force.com, Google App Engine, Apache Stratos. – InterviewDOT ?
hi great explanation i was able to catch up. i have one question if we need only PAAS can that be opted? or if we need PAAS do we need to get IAAS as well? any terms like that?
yes you are completely correct – happy learning – InterviewDOT
@Interview DOT Great!! you cleared my query!! Kudos!! So if we opt for SAAS that will include iaas and paas, am i right?
2) if we have a app development team and if we need infra and platform we can go for PAAS, am i right?
3) Though we have an infra if we opt for a paas, by default it comes with infra am i right?
Hi just to clarify ,once you opt for PAAS then PAAS includes the IAAS [PAAS [IAAS]] by default.
@Interview DOT thanks for replying, so if we have a infra we can just opt PAAS, if that is the case does the infra which we already have plays any role or its just dummy and we just use PAAS in cloud? 2) if PAAS used in our infra how PAAS is used in our infra?
Dear Sakthivel Padmaraj, Thanks a lot for your valuable feedback, I am happy that it helped you, yes you can opt only for PAAS its possible. Happy learning – InterviewDOT
